Opening Prayer

God of all the families of the world, for most of us it is enough to love but a few people deeply: spouse, friend, child, parent.  But your love is not an exclusive love.  You have given Jesus Christ to us as Savior, as friend, as brother.  And in Christ we have indeed found ourselves at home in your family.  We thank you for Jesus Christ, who greets each person as brother or sister, and summons us to recognize each other as family.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.  Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

(◙) The United Methodist Men are having their first supper and general meeting on Wednesday, October 5th at 6:30 p.m. in Heavener Hall.  They will be having their usual fare (pizza, subs, salad, beverage and dessert).  The cost is $5 payable at the door.  After a short business meeting at 7:30, a Montgomery County Police officer will give a presentation on “Personal Safety”.  If you would like to attend you may sign up in the church office.  Women are welcome and encouraged to attend the presentation and should plan to arrive sometime after 7:30.

Play Group – Unfortunately, the Play Group has been suspended, hopefully temporarily.  We are trying to find a day and time that would be most convenient to all who would be interested.  We’ll let you know when we’ve started back up.  In the meantime, please let Kate Lewis Brown know what would be best for you Johnkatebrown@his.com or 301-946-2008.

URGENTLY NEEDED – Food for Bethesda Help Food Closet.  Most needed items are: canned fruits, soups, meats, tuna, cereal, dried milk, peanut butter & jelly.  Please place donations in the marked box in the Narthex.

HELP NEEDED!  Could you prepare snacks for our Sunday School?  (This can be done mid-week.)  Contact Robin Mayhew 301-929-8185.

Please Celebrate Children’s Sabbath in October by donating items for health kits for Title 1 children in Montgomery County.  Although we continue to be concerned about people affected by this summer’s hurricanes, the United Methodist Women ask that you not forget the needs of children living in poverty in our own communities.  Whether you donate one item or many, or sew drawstring bags or not, we appreciate your support for this project.  Items needed by October 23rd are hand towel and washcloth, toothbrush and toothpaste, comb, brush, soap, and a package of emery boards.  Instructions for bags are in your August Epistle and on the poster in the Narthex.  Contact Becky Scheirer with any questions, 301-933-8140.
