Merciful God, we gather together as your Church and we come into one another’s presence and yours in the unity of your Holy Spirit.  At the door we drop our worldly wisdom and our pretensions of strength to make room for your wisdom that it may show forth among all peoples.  We leave behind our arrogant self-assurance to embrace your presence and love.  We do all this through Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

St. Paul’s “Strangers into Friends” Program – Surrounding St. Paul’s Church are many people, especially newcomers to our country who yearn to be our friends.  By becoming their friends we have an opportunity to serve Christ.  Montgomery County has the largest number of first generation immigrants of any county in Maryland, and many of these individuals would like to learn better English (Being Friends of Isolated Adults).  Without adults from whom they can learn, they are isolated.  The Justice and Compassion Ministry Team has been engaged in establishing a program by which members of our congregation would befriend students (Tutoring and Mentoring Students) by becoming their tutors on Saturdays.  Please sign up for the “Strangers into Friends” Program in the church office.

The September-October issue of THE UPPER ROOM devotional booklet is now available on the table in the Narthex.  Regular - $.75; large print - $1.

September 11th:  We will remember this day with two prayer services: Noon and 7 p.m. - in our Sanctuary.

(àà) FOCUS GROUPS SCHEDULED - As many of you are aware, our church has been in the planning stages for building renovation and expansion.  The Church Council and Trustees have completed much of the preliminary work and we are excited about presenting it to the congregation.

You are cordially invited to attend one of our Focus Group Meetings.  The purpose of these meetings is to give everyone in our congregation an opportunity to hear the proposed building and expansion plans for St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.  This is an excellent opportunity for each member of our church to provide the Church Council and Trustees with your thoughts concerning our needs.  All meetings will be held at the church in the Library.

The following is a list of dates and times of the meetings:

Sun.         August 27th                  9:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

Wed.        August 30th                  7:00 p.m.

Sun.         September 3rd             9:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

Thurs.       September 7th              7:00 p.m.

Sun.         September 10th            10:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Please check your schedules and mark your calendar for one of these very important meetings.  Each presentation will last approximately 20 minutes and light refreshments will be offered.  You will then have an opportunity to ask questions and to answer a brief, but important questionnaire before the meeting concludes.

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church is important to all of us and your suggestions are needed to be certain we are fulfilling our responsibilities to our congregation and our faith.

Labor Day Parade – We need you!  Please in sign up in the office to ride on the new bus or walk along as we pass out information and balloons for St. Paul’s.  We will meet at 9 a.m. at the parade start to decorate.  Come & join the fun!

Please note: there will be a meeting about a parish nursing program for St. Paul’s on September 6, 11 a.m.  Please call the church office (301-933-7933) to let us know you are interested.

Sunday School Teachers Needed – One teacher is needed for the 3rd grade class, second semester only, (Jan-May) and one teacher for the full year for the 2-year-old classroom.  All teachers work on “teams”, so that they teach twice a month, or a total of 15 Sundays a year.  For further information contact Robin Mayhew (301-929-8185 or Robin_Mayhew@comcast.net).
