Merciful God, you are our rock and our refuge, our very present help in times of trouble.  Draw close to us when we are afraid.  Draw even nearer when we begin to doubt your presence.  Remind us of the firm foundation of our faith as we look around this place today.  Help us remember the many ways you have been at work in our lives and in the world.  Amen.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.  Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

St. Paul’s “Strangers into Friends” Program – Surrounding St. Paul’s Church are many people, especially newcomers to our country who yearn to be our friends.  By becoming their friends we have an opportunity to serve Christ.  Montgomery County has the largest number of first generation immigrants of any county in Maryland, and many of these individuals would like to learn better English (Being Friends of Isolated Adults).  Without adults from whom they can learn, they are isolated.  The Justice and Compassion Ministry Team has been engaged in establishing a program by which members of our congregation would befriend students (Tutoring and Mentoring Students) by becoming their tutors on Saturdays.  Please sign up for the “Strangers into Friends” Program in the church office.

New Bible Studies announced - please sign up in the Narthex.

Authorized St. Paul’s Van Drivers - This summer, the UMM purchased a new (to us) used small bus.  It is a couple of feet longer and a bit wider than our 1998 15-passenger Dodge van.  The big advantage over our van is that it is far more stable (and safe) with dual tandem rear wheels.  Although a bit larger than our van, the bus is quite easy to drive, however; it is somewhat different than driving the van.  For this reason, our drivers will need to become familiar with its controls and characteristics as well as with driving it.  To provide this familiarity, a “get-acquainted with the bus” training session will be held on Saturday morning, August 26th at 9:00 AM in the church parking lot.  We would like as many of our authorized drivers as possible to attend this session.  Requests for use of the bus will only be approved for those drivers who have been trained.  Please let David Furman know if you will be able to attend the training on the 26th. His e-mail address is bigd20895@excite.com and his phone numbers are 301-933-6282 (home) and 301-370-0028 (cell).

Labor Day Help Needed – St. Paul’s will be involved in the Labor Day Parade this year.  You can ride the new bus or walk along side, passing out brochures and candy.  Please sign up in the church office if you can participate.  **Early Labor Day Monday assistance will be needed with decorating the bus!

(àà) FOCUS GROUPS SCHEDULED - As many of you are aware, our church has been in the planning stages for building renovation and expansion.  The Church Council and Trustees have completed much of the preliminary work and we are excited about presenting it to the congregation.

You are cordially invited to attend one of our Focus Group Meetings.  The purpose of these meetings is to give everyone in our congregation an opportunity to hear the proposed building and expansion plans for St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.  This is an excellent opportunity for each member of our church to provide the Church Council and Trustees with your thoughts concerning our needs.  All meetings will be held at the church in the Library.

The following is a list of dates and times of the meetings:

Sun.         August 20th                  9:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

Wed.        August 23rd                7:00 p.m.

Sun.         August 27th                  9:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

Wed.        August 30th                  7:00 p.m.

Sun.         September 3rd             9:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

Thurs.       September 7th              7:00 p.m.

Sun.         September 10th            10:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Please check your schedules and mark your calendar for one of these very important meetings.  Each presentation will last approximately 20 minutes and light refreshments will be offered.  You will then have an opportunity to ask questions and to answer a brief, but important questionnaire before the meeting concludes.

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church is important to all of us and your suggestions are needed to be certain we are fulfilling our responsibilities to our congregation and our faith.
