BREAD!!  Are you looking for a way to show someone you care?  St. Paul’s UMC is starting a bread charity that is part of a national movement called “Spread the Bread”. We will be using the Heavener Hall kitchen once a week to bake bread.  The bread then will be delivered to individuals who are having a tough time (such as someone who has lost a parent, someone recovering from surgery, etc.) and, on a rotating basis, to groups who would appreciate it, such as nursing homes, Children’s Inn at NIH, etc.  The bread will be wrapped as a gift and include a note expressing our care.  If you know a person or a group who would appreciate a loaf or loaves of bread, please fill out the short form in the church office.  Questions?  Please feel free to contact Jenny Smith at 301-946-3804 or jenny.kensington@verizon.net.

Worship attendance last Sunday: 403

& “Celebrating the Third Place – On Sunday, April 15, from 11:30 to 1 p.m., Mike McCurry and David Stegmaier will lead a book study.  They recommend first reading the author’s earlier book, “The Great Good Place”, as it provides the context for his later work.  You are invited to read these inspiring stories about the “great good places at the heart of our communities….where the magical combination of comfort, familiarity, and good company transform an ordinary hangout into our special third place.”  Both books are available at Amazon.com.

Spring Yard Sale will be held on Friday, April 13th and Saturday, April 14th.  Receiving day will be on Thursday, April 12th.  We, more so than usual, are in need of donations of good SELLABLE merchandise.  As usual, lots of volunteers are needed.  Please sign up in the church office if you can help!

LENTEN OFFERING (see envelope)

  • HIV/AIDS (Project Hope) Ministry is an initiative of the United Methodist Deacons to rehabilitate unused portions of the hospital adjacent to Africa University in Old Mutare, Zimbabwe.  A medical intern will be hired to provide basic health care services for marginalized patients infected with HIV/AIDS.  The project will also engage university students in the care of these patients.

  • Katrina survivors through the United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR).  Members of our congregation have participated in restoring homes in New Orleans.  We have been able to help ease the heavy burden on Katrina survivors, but there is still a lot of healing to be done, and UMCOR is on the scene.

  • Montgomery Avenue Women’s Center helps break the cycle of homelessness for women so they will achieve self-sufficiency.  The center seeks to care for their basic needs, providing lunch, clothing and health items as needed, and a safe environment.  They are also offered services including resume writing and interviewing skills, basic computer skills, and assistance with housing.

  • The Montgomery County Community Based Shelter has been serving homeless people since 1983.  It provides residence, food, counseling, job placement, and other services for individuals who are attempting to return to a self-supporting life.  One way you can help is to volunteer to prepare a meal for our sisters and brothers in this shelter.  The first week of May has been designated for this purpose.

  • St. Paul’s church building project in Nicaragua (Under Volunteers in Mission) is appealing for financial assistance to fund a church building project in a small Nicaraguan village.  Our members, who will be working on this project for six days in July, are paying for their own travel and housing expenses.  They need our prayers and support.
