MAUNDY THURSDAY

Order of Worship                                                                April 5, 2007

(*Stand, as you are able)

The Thursday of Holy Week is one of the earliest celebrations of the Christian church.  The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin Mandatum, meaning commandment.  It comes from the statement of Jesus in the Upper Room, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you love one another.  By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”  As we celebrate Maundy Thursday, we observe the Last Supper of our Lord in Jerusalem celebrating the Passover feast with his disciples.  There the sacrament of Holy Communion is given birth.  Tennebrae celebrates the lights that always reign supreme even as Jesus faced death on the Friday we call Good.

Prayer of Confession

L:        The Lord be with you.

       P:       And also with you.

       L:        Let us pray.

Loving God, the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  Forgive us our sin.  Fill us with the power to follow you.  Grant that we may not scatter and leave you desolate.  Help us to abide with you through the great darkness to the dawn that will surely come.  Amen.

Prayer of Silent Confession

Words of Assurance

Who is in a position to condemn?  Only Christ.  But Christ suffered and died for us that we might continue to have life.  In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!  Thanks be to God.  Amen.

Receiving the Elements

Tonight you are invited to receive the elements of communion by intinction after which you may walk around the Sanctuary to the various stations as you spend some time in prayer and reflection:

Water: Dip your hands into the water remembering how Jesus’ washed the feet of his disciples.  How might you be a servant this week?

Sand: As you run your hands through the grains of sand, remember that we are as a grain of sand, too numerous to count except for God, who counts us worthy enough to know the number of hairs on our heads.  Here, as you kneel, give thanks for blessings in your life.

Oil: Place a drop of oil on your head knowing that you have been claimed as a child of God by the Anointed One.  Where do you need healing in your live—offer those to God.

Sweet-smelling Candle: Smell the wondrous fragrance and be reminded of Christ’s sweet sacrifice for our sins.  Offer to God the confessions of your heart.  Use the paper and pencils provided.  These will be taken to the garden at the very end of our service.

*Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.  Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.
